“untitled” – documents (of street culture)
Here we go again. Early 2007 will see the 6th installation of the “untitled”- exhibition in Barcelona – and in Berlin as well. Due to the circumstances that this will be “untitled VI”, the exhibition will showcase personal belongings, influential items, beloved collectibles and artwork contributed by protagonists from each and every continent, six continents to be precise. Though, we still don’t know who will be contributing from Downtown Antarctica.
Last season, with “untitled V”, we asked various artists, designers and industry heads to send in their favorite items, nowadays talented and significant individuals from our culture should exhibit what they consider to be representative for their surroundings and personal history. This culture is globally almost identical due to massive use of blogs, magazines and other media, whereas only little differences are witnessed. Maybe these little dissimilarities are the most important characteristics of each art, design or product made by these protagonists. On the other hand, the selected protagonists do not represent their region, country or continent. It’s just an adequate way to show some fascinating aspects of the work by creative people from every place.
Further we still don’t know if this titled “street culture” really fits. We are discussing this term over a long period of time by now, we are arguing about it, because it really sounds inappropriate, this term sucks. This may be suitable for marketing relevant considerations, but it surely does not characterize every genuine field in that game.
So we should finally say “goodbye” to that specific term – and get rid of this definition.
The “untitled” show started about five years ago when Streetwear Today, Lodown Magazine and Bread&Butter joined to put everything on display that surrounds the creative and everyday life of skateboarding, Graffiti, street wear, BMX, and the artistic outlet and music. The “untitled” exhibition serves as a window to get a glimpse of that specific culture, its past, present and, somehow, future.
Please come over, visit the booth and have a drink. Join the discussion about the exhibits, the rants concerning latest developments and everything else with all people attending.
Please be surprised what will be displayed in Berlin – and so are we.
